While it’s exciting to write (and learn) about various subjects every day, it can get really draining sometimes… Like now. I just want to momentarily escape writing professionally, which explains this blog entry. Ok, so my brain just gave up on me—and I have nothing much to say. Better get back into business. Bye now.

How to Complete or Revamp Your oDesk Profile

Since I have been writing quite a lot of “How To” articles for one of my oDesk clients, I came up with an idea to write one about completing or revamping your oDesk profile. So, fellow oDeskers, especially the greenhorns out there, learn below some of my tried and tested guidelines on how to give your oDesk profile a face-lift and ultimately, obtain more buyers:

1. Come up with a catchy title – I notice that some of the providers’ titles are simply boring. It’s not that hard to perhaps add an adjective that best describes your role/s. If you can think of a captivating title, that’s a definite plus!

2. Write a brief and honest objective – Some people miss out this very crucial part of their oDesk profile. It’s essential to supply your purpose for registering as an oDesk provider—whether as a data encoder, virtual assistant, SEO writer or what have you. It need not be a long one, just a concise and sincere explanation of what buyers can expect from you.

3. Say something about your skills and talents – Don’t simply enumerate them; describe them as explicit as you can. A lot of buyers would absolutely want to readily determine how much you know about a specific skill set. So, don’t just use the rating system and leave the description blank. Maximize it by putting a sentence or two detailing what you’re really good at.

4. Take more tests – You should take advantage of these practical tests, especially the ones related to your role/s to show your abilities. Hide those test results that are not so impressive. Plus, remember that you can retake the exams after a month, so don’t lose hope if you scored low—there’s always a next time. Additionally, take free Brainbench tests; subscribe to be notified if they’re giving out free tests.

5. Furnish an awesome portfolio – Don’t leave this section blank, if at all possible. Most buyers would love to see some samples of your masterpieces; don’t be shy to show them what you got. If you have a blog that you manage, a website you’ve designed, etc., include them all on this portion. The possibilities here are simply infinite—get creative!

6. Watch out for your work history and feedback – While we can’t do much about this, apart from being a diligent oDesk provider, you can hide some unpleasant remarks from previous buyers. The only viable solution really is to devote your 100% commitment to whatever assignments you’re given and that is tantamount to a satisfied buyer and a positive feedback!

7. Don’t ignore the “Others” – I see tons of oDesk profiles that totally neglect this very nice feature. Here, you can pretty much include anything that can add some spice to your oDesk profile—trainings you took, seminars you attended, special awards or recognition you received, etc. This is the place to brag about yourself, in a good way.

8. Take pride in your educational attainment – Don’t simply input your school and the years attended, like most people do. Describe it in a few words; say you graduated top 10 of the batch or you were best in Math, etc.—pour them all out here.

9. Exhibit your current or previous job/s on the resume section – If you have a current work aside from oDesk or had previous work experiences outside oDesk, be sure to include them as well. These employments positively add credibility to your oDesk profile. With that in thought, don’t forget to fill out this part.

10. Set a reasonable rate – While we have the power to put whatever rate we desire, it’s very vital to make it logical. If you really think you are excellent in what you do and you can prove it or your feedbacks and test scores show as such, by all means you have every right to demand a higher rate. And to those who offer an extremely low rate but can perform really well, I suggest not to undersell yourself just to obtain more buyers. Majority of buyers won’t really mind to pay high for quality providers. But if you are getting paid low, just work more efficiently to impress your buyers and you can eventually ask for a gradual rate increase.

11. Last but definitely not the least—attach a photo, preferably your picture and not some avatar or symbol – Your picture doesn’t even need to be super formal; as long as it’s decent, that should be fine. Besides, having a snapshot sets everything in and makes your oDesk profile more interesting to check out.

I guess that’s all folks. I have exhausted with all my might every tip I could think of. But I want to reiterate to please complete your profile to 100% to have an edge and get noticed by buyers! NO to Bataan Nuclear Power Plant!

Lacking feasibility study, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) is structurally defective and hazardous. The location also has an unacceptably extreme risk of serious damage from earthquakes, volcanism, or both. Moreover, BNPP is costly to operate and accompanied by ridiculous hidden costs. It is indeed, a blazing demonstration of the government’s continuing imprudent debt policy at the expense of the people's security. The BNPP is NOT an answer to Climate Crisis, nor an alternative to Renewable Energy.

Let's all defy the useless agenda to rehabilitate BNPP. Meanwhile, in support of anti-BNPP, here's a video of the Jerks performing, "Nukleyar" together with Noel Cabangon at 70's Bistro last March 20.

Meteor Garden is my sole favorite Asian TV show, which I have already watched several times since college days. I really heart Dao Ming Si and Shancai's team-up. Whenever I want to walk down memory lane and be nostalgic, I find myself watching again this show and it still never fails to make me laugh and cry.

Just moments ago, I was browsing Meteor Garden's soundtrack and came across this sort of music video with various clips from Meteor Garden. I think the song "You'll Be In My Heart" by Phil Collins perfectly fits the snippets compilation. See below:

Summer Lovin'

Busy as a bee, I’m already anticipating that these coming months will be sizzling hot for me. This summertime, I will be wearing several hats aside from already being a writer—I’ll be a student (again) and an intern / volunteer. Oh, lately, I’ve been doing some “charity” works as a tutor, proofreader / editor, tour guide and virtual assistant, too, to some friends.

But what I’m really looking forward to is going back to school, yay! Having a voracious hunger for learning, I’m exponentially excited to relish the school campus ambiance again and unlock my brain to absorb like a sponge every tidbit of fresh information from my would-be professors.

In the class that I will be taking up, I will be learning an ocean of knowledge about World History, International Relations and Politics, Economics, Philippine Literature, to name some. And I will be studying in Ateneo de Manila University, one of the top-notch universities in the Philippines, where I also plan to send my kid/s in the very distant future.

On to becoming an intern / volunteer, this is actually for a local travel magazine that promotes alternative traveling. I learned about this position through my friend, Mitch. I’m not really sure how many people passed their resume or how many helping hands they needed, but I’m grateful I was chosen. This is going to be another “charity” work or free service that I will be providing. It makes me ponder sometimes that I’m too kind. Anyway, I’ll be doing this internship stuff to learn more about the travel industry and travel writing, too, while I supply them with my exceptional service. I just might be included as well in their trips around the country, which I will no doubt love and not resist at all—except if I have school. Also, I will certainly have an edge to be part of their team as a full time travel writer. It’s a win/win situation, don’t you agree?

With regard to the extra and kind of outlandish jobs that I do for my dear friends, I find contentment in doing various tasks for them or at least in helping them. I take those as challenges / exercises for me to overcome and hopefully make them happy as well. Modesty aside, I want them to learn from me, too. Hahaha. And, perhaps I like the idea of being needed sometimes. Hahaha. KSP na kung KSP [lacking attention]!

However, despite my kindheartedness, I sometimes feel abused by some insensitive person/s. Well, I guess Mr. Up-There will take care of that/those person/s. But I never regret whatever type of help I provide. It’s always an achievement for me to be able to assist people, see them learn and stand on their own. Naks!

So, seeing these pursuits that I’m currently doing and will be doing, the approaching summer days will truly be hot and hectic for Fifi. I just hope I’d still have some spare time to visit my family in the province, have coffee and watch gigs with close friends and… that’s all about it basically.

I came across this funny and ultra cool wedding dance video on YouTube while I was browsing some Jack Johnson videos. The newly weds danced slowly to Jack Johnson's "Better Together" and later on surprised the guests and rocked to Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel." It was really a unique idea to do such! According to the video information, the couple choreographed the dance themselves. How creative! Good job!

If I get married someday (hahaha), I swear I'm gonna do something like that. I know I have no originality; pardon me please! My future husband has to be cool and willing to somehow make fun of ourselves (in a pleasant way) on our first day of togetherness!

McDonald's Philippines "First Love" Commercial

I seldom watch TV these days—so when a friend texted me about this new "cute" TVC from McDonald's, I checked it out immediately on YouTube. My curiosity paid off because it was indeed nice! The video presented a universal appeal, using "First Love" as its subject. It also provided that nostalgic and heartwarming feeling, making you want to reminisce the first time you fell in love or your childhood sweetheart. Not to mention, it makes you sigh, "Aaaaaww." Hahaha. So mushy!

Strange but good, the ad agency behind this TVC injected an '80s vibe to it (teased hairstyle, shoulder pads, colored socks and the works!) while using a '90s song (Ang Huling El Bimbo) and being played in the first decade of the new millennium (2009). Hmm... Anyhow, I loved it that they chose snippets of the song "Ang Huling El Bimbo" by the Eraserheads, which was just perfect for the plot.

A Fantastic Year on oDesk

It's been exactly a year since I started being a freelance provider at oDesk.com . I discovered it via a local forum, being an Internet junkie that I am. I did try my luck signing up since it's free anyway; I'm really glad I did!

I must say it's such an amazing blessing for me for a lot of reasons. First, I never realized that I truly have a flair for writing until my buyers in oDesk show their much appreciation about my articles. Second, I'm learning tons of things from my buyers - such as SEO, link building, Internet marketing and etc. I really love it when apart from earning extra income; I'm also broadening my knowledge about different stuff. Third, oDesk is a great way to sustain my financial needs. It's good to know that I have additional supplements for my travel bugs and other whims.

Furthermore, what I like most about oDesk is its guaranteed payment for hourly rates, so I don't have to worry about non-paying buyers. Also, there's transparency between buyers and providers as buyers can monitor providers' progress through oDesk's "Work Diary." You can as well choose a variety of payment methods suited for you. Another perk I want to rave about is that I can make money in the convenience of my home. No need to don a corporate dress, a pair of ragged pajamas will do just fine. Twilight - movie review

Yesterday, some of my friends and I watched the much anticipated movie, Twilight – based from Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same title. Yeah, finally after watching several trailers and teasers on YouTube, I’ve fully seen it on the big screen.

Of course, I did my assignment on reading the book first for comparison purposes and to excite me even more. I have actually bumped into this novel like a couple of years back and was planning to buy it, but never had enough motivation to do so. Although, I have been quite a vampire aficionado for quite some time now because of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, I had second thoughts of buying Twilight for fear of not being able to match Anne Rice’s craft in writing. Anyway, fast forward to the present, it was a good book, less gory and flowery than Anne Rice’s descriptions. But I will always love Anne Rice’s Lestat just perhaps because Stephenie Meyer’s Edward is too young for me! Hahaha!

Anyhow, I went to the mall 2 hours before the screening time to pick up the tickets as required when you reserved in advance. Good thing I did so because when I got to the cinema counter, the line was long and winding!

After an hour or so of waiting for my friends at a coffee shop, we excitedly headed to the cinema; we got good seats of course! Thanks to me! Every now and then we were exchanging giggles and such like we were in high school again!

The part that I liked most was when Edward saved Bella from Tyler’s van. Yeah, I’ve seen that on the trailer but seeing it on the big screen was awesome! But like many other movie adaptations, there were some alterations, like Bella and Charlie dining every meal at the café as opposed to Bella cooking at home; surfing at La Push versus having a picnic and beach bumming to name a few.

Nevertheless, I loved the following characters:

Charlie – The best! He’s so thoughtful and protective. So funny, too! I can’t forget his persistence about the pepper spray.

Alice – She looked like just how I imagined her.

Jasper – I loved his character just because he looked really ridiculous and barely said a thing.

Edward and Bella – I really didn’t like them much but they looked good together.

Before I forget, I didn’t like the chiming sounds when Edward’s skin sparkled into the sun. I find it kinda corny; they should’ve omitted the sound effect and just let Edward’s skin shimmer.

All in all, it was great seeing the novel come alive. Now, don't hate me for patronizing Twilight Saga. I'm not emo at all as what most fans are. I simply adore vampire flicks and novels!

Fight Club Final Scene

Fight Club remains to be one of my most favorite movies ever made. There was really great acting done by both Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. I especially like the gruesome fight scenes and the madness all throughout.

The film depicts non-conformity in a lot of ways. It makes you realize that following trends, commercials and what most people do would not guarantee you happiness. Never pretend and try to be someone you’re not.

There was a quote there that hits me because it’s true and it’s happening. Here: Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. Another one: I say never be complete. I say stop being perfect. I say let's evolve. Let the chips fall where they may.

But the thing that gives me goose bumps every time is the final scene of Fight Club, wherein the narrator (Edward Norton) held Marla Singer’s hand (Helena Bonham Carter) and said, "You met me at a very strange time in my life," while the buildings were collapsing simultaneously. It was sweet in an eerie kind of way. The music “Where is My Mind” by the Pixies was very well suited, too, to this ending scene.

I Missed Them! Aaargh!

Until now, I'm still not over of the fact that I failed to watch the Eraserheads Reunion Concert! There even came a time I didn't want to talk about it with friends. I was then unaware that the concert was cut short because Ely Buendia had a heart attack.

Aside from his medical condition, apparently, her mother just passed away 2 days prior the concert, so it's natural that he's emotionally fragile. It's good to know that the fans were very understanding and still appreciative that the band got together for one brief night of performance. How I truly wish I was there. I just browsed some video clips of their reunion concert in YouTube; and OMG, I screamed for excitement I almost cried. Perhaps even so if I was watching it live! Waaaah! Ely Buendia, for some unexplainable reason is really hot! Astig!

Fortunately, Ely is now doing better after recovering from his 3rd angioplasty surgery. I hope and pray there'd be a part 2 of this concert; I'd make it a point not to miss it! I wish Ely good health of course!

Drowning With Books

Recently, I gathered all the pending-to-be-read books that I have. I found myself drowning with too many of them. Although I have much time for reading now, I’m still clueless which one to pick first.

To name some of these books are:

Armand by Anne Rice – I started a few chapters like a couple of years back but I can’t flip more than 5 pages and I already feel my eyes drooping. It’s fine but I find Armand’s story too gay-ish for my taste. I’ve got nothing against 3rd sex but I simply can’t take some of the scenes. I plan to finish this soon so I can move on to Anne Rice’s other collections of Vampire Chronicles.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova – This is another vampire story that I started when I got tired of Armand. I have read maybe a couple of chapters; so far so good, but I’m lazy!

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini – I didn’t know that the movie has been out before reading this. I don’t want to watch the movie yet without reading the book. Well, up to now the book is good as new and still wrapped in plastic.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman – I got this as a gift from Ross during my birthday. I’ve read the synopsis on line, but just like the Kite Runner, it’s still untouched and covered in plastic.

The Mummy by Anne Rice – I have read a few pages and it seemed interesting; however, I want to read this after finishing the Vampire Chronicles.

The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren – I borrowed this from a former colleague 3 years ago, I think. Scanned through it but I have no purpose of reading it. I don’t know why. Maybe it doesn’t appeal to me much.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez – Done with 25% of it and I’m not certain if I can finish it. If I continue with it, I better start with the first page again since the character names are very confusing.

The Best Philippine Short Stories Of The 20th Century by various authors – Well, first of all it’s thick and heavy. Done with covering it, haven’t read a thing yet.

Kafka On The Shore by Haruki Murakami – This is my constant book in the office, which I always try to read during “petiks” (idle) mode. I have read 3 chapters or so; it’s interesting I think. I lent it to Mitch and she finished it in no time. It was ok, according to her, whatever that means.

Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt – I’ve no idea what this book is about. I’m quite scared about the boy on the cover for reasons I don’t know. It was made into a movie as per the cover.

Books 5-7 of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling – Elaine’s brother lent these to me, hardbound! The only consequence is I should have covered them when I return them. Sure. Gone through with the introduction of The Order Of Phoenix and that’s it so far. It reminded me of college days when I started reading Harry Potter, nostalgic.

Not to mention the Twilight ebook I got from Leslie. I think I will prioritize this, as the movie will be out in 2 months. I’m not really used to reading ebooks as I love to read lying down, feeling the book in my hands and later on sleeping with it. We'll see.

HP Mini, I wanna make you mine

For someone like me who earns extra income through the Internet, it’s really nice to come across a contest like this one from HP. I discovered this via GIRLTalk.

I have been thinking of getting myself a laptop and this HP Compaq 2133 Mini-Note PC is one of the candidates I’m eyeing on. Although quite small, it’s very portable and light especially designed for people like me who loves to travel. Its hard drive space is impressive at 120G, more room for music and videos, oops and files for work! No need to worry about spilling drinks when I’m in a coffee shop as it has spill-resistant keyboard, perfect for clumsy hands like mine. This comes handy for an Internet junkie like me who can’t wait to get home and sit in front of my computer. Its OS is already Windows Vista, as if I know the difference! Hahaha. Ross, my gadget consultant advised I should opt for a Vista ready notebook. Ok, if he said so.

Well, I just deeply wish to win this contest or else I might be forced to purchase one. Save, save, save! Once I get this baby, I'm gonna name her "Happy" because I'm positive we'd spend a lot of blissful times together.

I stumbled upon this great cover of Bush's Glycerine. First of all, I'm not into acoustic thing and remakes. But when I saw this video, I was really amazed.

Her name on Youtube first caught my attention - TheBathroomGirl. Intriguing isn't it? Hmmm. So, I checked her out and found out that she's a BBC - British Born Chinese. According to her, she sings in the bathroom because it has good acoustics. Interesting. I myself sing in the shower because it's quite relaxing and no one really cares unlike singing in a videoke/karaoke bar. Anyway, she truly did give justice to the song. I love it. She's pretty too.

So little time, so much to do

I’m overwhelmed with plenty of things I’m itching to do. Contemplating about them consumes a lot of time. Some say it’s just a matter of time management. But what if you have so little time and so many things to do?

Sure you can categorize them as short term plans and long term plans. However, I’m poor at recognizing which goal is more essential as sometimes I want to perform first what I want than what I need. See the difference?

Here are things that I’d love to do but can live without (really?):

Surfing
Traveling
Studying Photoshop
Studying Culinary Arts
Learning and mastering a second language
Driving (yeah, I still don’t know how to!)

You can see that most of these things (if not all) are all about learning. And learning for me is fun because I’m a sucker for anything that can broaden my knowledge, given that it falls under my definition of “interesting." It’s just driving me nuts not to be able to do stuff that I’m passionate about. That’s when pressure comes handy. Sometimes you need to push and challenge yourself
to do them as soon as possible. But what’s the rush? I have all my life to make these “dreams” come alive.

Meanwhile, there are some more important things I need to attend to:

Meeting deadlines
Saving money!
Being fit and healthy
Closing family ties
Writing!!!

I guess I should stop pondering and start accomplishing something. Hmmm.

I Need A New Computer Chair!

I'm so pathetic to be still using an old school study table for my PC. The table works just fine, but the wooden chair sucks.

My chair is almost limping because of the bags hanging on its sides and not to mention my heavy weight as an added burden. It badly needs rehabilitation. Otherwise, it should be stored away. We're not getting along anyway. I can't sit on it comfortably and I can attribute my constant backaches to this ugly chair! After several hours together, I feel like going to the spa and have a relaxing back massage. By the way, my neck and butt hurt too if I continuously spend time in front of the computer. A full body massage would be much better I guess. It's so tiresome and difficult to deal with. It resembles a lot like this picture below.

I've been planning to get a real computer chair, like the ones we have in the office. I want something that easily adjusts, smoothly rocks, conveniently glides, and softly cushions when I'm sitting. Ergonomic, that's the right term. I may need to scout in an office depot or something. I don't even have a bright idea how much this would cost, but it's definitely an investment since I'm a internet junkie and I do my side jobs online. I need something that functions like this picture below.

Once I get a new one, I'll surely post a before and after photos of my soon to be ex-chair and future chair. 'Til then, I would need to woo my chair to be rather nice and cooperative.

The Jerks

The Jerks is one of the original alternative rock, rhythm and blues bands in the Philippines, featuring Chickoy Pura (vocalist). They were formed in 1979 under the Marcos regime. Their 1st album "The Jerks Live!" was not released until 1994! It was recorded at the legendary Mayric's Bar under a local independent label, Backdoor Records.

In 1997, they had another album entitled "Haligi ng Maynila," which gave them the chance to reach a wider audience and even paved the way for winning 1998 NU Rock Awards for Best Album and the 1998 Katha Music Awards for Best Rock Song "Reklamo ng Reklamo."

I first heard of the Jerks at 70's Bistro, singing Bob Marley's original "I Shot The Sheriff." I think I was in 4th Year High School then and I wasn't really impressed because I guess I was into something-else-music-genre at the time.

Years passed, I find myself so into the Jerks. I really hope to catch them live at 70's Bistro but they usually play on Fridays and I have work at night! Err. I watched them once at Tiendesitas on a Sunday; however, I kinda don't like the ambiance and crowd there. It's a free show so I can't afford to complain and should really not expect a lot. I enjoyed their music nonetheless which mostly deals with inequities and problems in Philippine society. They do have a few love songs too!

My personal favorites are: Sayaw Sa Bubog, Reklamo Ng Reklamo, Rage, Minsan Karaniwang Tao, and Bitterly.

Bitterly is an intense song especially if you've just broken up. I'm not heartbroken at the moment (Thank God!), yet I feel sorrowful and nostalgic when I hear this song. I simply can't get enough of it. I HIGHLY recommend you choose and listen to it from the playlist below.

HBO's Screening of An Inconvenient Truth

For the benefit of those people unaware what An Inconvenient Truth is all bout, it is an American Academy Award-winning documentary film about global warming discussed in detailed by ex U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

It is highly recommended for everyone to see, as each one of us is a guilty contributor to climate change. This provides not only awareness but as well as possible solutions to overcome this crisis.

The docu may bore you with the presentations but it is really informative. I consider this a frightening film knowing that we might eventually lose our only home – Earth!

There are some on-going criticisms and skepticisms about this film but in my opinion, this is no joke.

If you haven't seen it and you're from the Philippines, this is your chance to watch it on HBO tomorrow, April 22 at 9 pm to 11 pm. It's a meaningful way to celebrate Earth Day. In case you miss it, I think it's already available on DVD/VCD.

By the way, I also loved the soundtrack of An Inconvenient Truth , the one performed by Melissa Etheridge entitled “I Need To Wake Up." The song fairly suits the message of the film. We really need to wake up before it’s too late. You may listen to it below.

Earth Hour 2008. Lights Off Please!!!

Last year, Sydney, Australia initiated Earth Hour movement to somehow decrease energy consumption. That great step became the inspiration for this year's campaign to help stop climate change. On March 29, 13 cities in 7 continents around the world will participate in this worthy event by simply turning off the lights in 1 hour. That full 60 minutes of darkness will make a huge impact in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.

The cities that will join this precious 60 minutes are: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra (Australia), Chicago (North America), Toronto (Canada), Tel Aviv (Israel), Suva (Fiji), Copenhagen, Aahus, Odense and Aalborg (Denmark), and Manila (Philippines).

This act will hope to ignite and encourage people to be more environmental friendly. It will certainly manifest a major concern for climate change; promote awareness; and demand for action from the general public.

Global warming is the greatest challenge our planet Earth is facing. I want to believe that we can still resolve this universal issue that we are all guilty of. With proper awareness, unity, corrective actions, we can still save our one and only place – Earth!

Three time Grammy award winning reggae artist Damian Marley is said to be coming to Manila! He’s the son of the legend Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, a former Miss World 1976. There’s an on-going rumor that Damian will be in town this April or perhaps later than that! Cool summer huh?! How true is this??

I can vividly recall Ziggy Marley’s Reggae Fest By the Bay last year, March 24! It was for his album “Love Is My Religion” world tour. Of course, I was there at the chic poolside of Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza jammin' and skankin’ in the crowd! How can I miss it? It was a patchwork of reggae music such as roots, rock, reggae, punk, ska, dancehall, and funk. A lot of great local bands shared positive vibes that night. There was an awesome roster of performers which included Coffeebreak Island, Indio I, Junior Kilat, Kudos, La Cucarasta, Milagros Dancehall Collective, Peacepipe, Reggae Mistress, Rubadub, Spy, and Tropical Depression! Pepe Smith was even there; he jammed with Papa Dom and Junior Kilat singing “Ang Himig Natin.” What a great rendition indeed! Too bad, Session Road was not part of the show because they also do some great reggae concoctions and I find Hannah Romawac really pretty and astig. The highlight was of course Ziggy Marley's take on Bob Marley‘s classics like Jamming, Get Up Stand Up, Positive Vibration, Could You Be Loved, and Is this Love. He surely skanked and sang considerably like his father! It was an eerie feeling that literally gave me goosebumps listening and watching him perform!

I can consider this event as one of the best reggae occasions I have ever witnessed. The venue was perfect for a summer setting. The props and production were spectacular. I have seen a lot beautiful and happy people too! It was simply amazing!

On to Damian Marley… I’m not his greatest fan but I’m kinda interested also with dancehall, so I’d love to see him do some toasting. Besides, he’s Bob Marley’s son; and that’s a big deal for me! I can’t wait for him to sing “Jamrock” and “One More Cup of Coffee” (derived obviously from Bob Marley’s “One Cup of Coffee”).

I fervently wish that he’d really visit Manila! I heard MTV is still negotiating this. I made some research and looks like it was just a gossip, at least for now. I checked Reggae Festival E-Guide and Damian Marley doesn’t have any scheduled tour in Manila. Well, I’m patient so I could wait longer and I will surely be there when he stops by Manila!

Trivia: Late Bob Marley wrote the song “Turn Your Lights Down Low” for Damian’s mother, Cindy Breakspeare.

CBI & Indio I's Back To Back Gig

A smashing night out for me is watching Coffeebreak Island & Indio I doing a back-to-back gig at Xaymaca. Two of my favorite bands in my favorite bar! It’s always an awesome experience that I wouldn't trade for a night in Embassy, Temple or what-have-yous!

I always love CBI’s take on ska and a bit of punk and rock. They also do well with reggae but their specialty is really ska. My top picks from them are: Rock The Casbah by The Clash, Easy by Faith No More/The Commodores, Come Together by The Beatles, Saba by Mephiskapheles, Rudies All Around by Hepcat, 54-46 by Toots and the Maytals, Lip Up Fatty by Bad Manners, Caress Me Down by Sublime, Ranking Full Stop by English Beat, Hard To Handle by Black Crowes, Reklamo ng Reklamo by The Jerks and the list goes on!

Indio I is very good at reggae standards and a few ska. My best bets are: Zimbabwe by Bob Marley, King Without A Crown by Matisyahu, Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth, Don’t Turn Around by Aswad, So Lonely by The Police and of course their original, Di Mo Lang Alam which is like Waiting In Vain’s local version. Trivia: the song was for Vic Facultad’s ex-wife/gf Miren. He wrote it when he was still courting the girl. 'Til now it’s still sometimes a pain for him to sing that song.

Lat Saturday, we watched the two bands performed & they were amazing as always! We arrived early but all seats were already taken or reserved but it’s fine; we don’t normally sit when were there. We just stood near the bar and always ready when it’s time to skank! Yeah! Ross’ business partner, Myla came with us to watch CBI & Indio I. It was her first time to see them and she loved them though she’s not into reggae. She definitely had fun. We all had a great time! The crowd’s energy at Xaymaca was really contagious and everyone was happy! For some reason, there are a lot of beautiful people that night which quite seldom happens. It’s just a bonus. I don’t really care about the people. I just wanna enjoy the music and the dancing.

The only downside that night was that the entrance fee decreased from P175 to Php 150 BUT there’s only 1 local beer included. It used to be Php 175 for 2 beers! Xaymaca’s becoming pocket unfriendly lately; but I still can’t let go of that place! I don’t think I’ll ever let it go even if I’m already old & wrinkly! I would still do the skank! Jah bless! :D

Lost And Found Another!

Being a reggae lover myself, it was really cool to find any rasta or Jamaican insignia. However, I carefully choose reggae items that I use. They have to be distinct ones and something rare like Jun of CBI’s Hepcat shirt.
I wanna make sure that they don’t have a very loud Bob Marley image or too flashy rasta colors (red, yellow, green, black) design. I’m deeply into reggae genre but you’ll seldom see me wearing those.

One fine day, I stumbled upon a pair of Jamaican inspired earrings in Divisoria telling me to go buy it! And hell I did, without even blinking! The store only has that 1 pair so I really didn’t have second thoughts of getting it. It’s definitely a steal for a unique piece cheaply priced at Php 20. It was teardrop shaped just bigger version with a Jamaican flag design. Lovely!

Unfortunately, I lost one piece somewhere in the office. My guess was that it slipped off while I was drop dead asleep in the sleeping area. I didn’t find it anywhere; I almost wanted to cry because I know I won’t be able to find anything like it.

Months went by, I was way past my mourning about that incident. Then, during one of our Xaymaca nights, I unexpectedly saw that same pair of earrings being sold at Php 25! I didn’t think twice and bought it right away. I was soooo excited I wore it at once, yay!

I would definitely take care of this new pair as if it’s an expensive diamond earring. I would never sleep again wearing it.

Victory On Valentine’s Day

V-Day & I was in the office doing the usual crap. Did I mind it? No, not at all! I don’t go on a date during Valentine’s Day & I’m not bitter, it’s just not my thing.

We were allowed to wear casual clothes that day, but there was a color-coding of some sort going on. If you’re married, you have to wear white. For those who are in a relationship, wear RED (the bloodier, the better). For singles, you got to be in black (as if mourning!) Finally for those “it’s complicated” status, be in blue. Wondering what did I wear? Well, I came in pink & pretty at that. (Just kidding!) Why pink? It’s the first thing I snatched out of my closet & I was running out of time. I had some touches of red though; my belt, my flats & my pony tail.

I was on time, great! My colleagues were actually serious about the colored scheme after all. I scanned through my emails & so there’s a raffle for everyone! I didn't care, my seatmates & I didn’t even talk about it until the HR people roamed around & gave us a piece of paper to write our names so we can be included in the raffle. I scribbled down my entry w/ a red ball pen & I said to myself “Malamang manalo pa ko nito!” (I most likely will win on this raffle) w/o even knowing what the prizes were.

There was even a dating game held but I was not interested to watch it. So, the day ended as usual. When I came home, my supervisor texted me asking how much will I sell the iPod shuffle? I had no idea what he was talking about but I had a clue that it was about the raffle. Then he told me that the winners were announced via email. Wow, I did win huh?

The next day I found out it was for real. Lucky me, 2nd Apple from our company! About 2 years I go, I won my “Maki” (Mac Mini computer set) via a contest. Note: Contest & not a raffle. I’m feeling humble so I won’t spill out the details. Going back to the raffle, I claimed my prize & it was a 512MB iPod Shuffle. My mind was suddenly telling me, “You can sell it for Php 1,200-1,500!” That’s right! I won’t need it since I already have a 30G iPod video whose name is “Pao-pao.” My new teammate swore she’ll take it for Php 1,200. Great, I don’t need to post it on eBay.

No one gave me flowers or chocolates that day. And thank God no one gave me a furry teddy bear! Praise the Lord I won again!

Marley Fest 2008 at Xaymaca

We went to Xaymaca for Marley Fest 2008 last Saturday & as expected, the place was jam packed w/ reggae fans & posers. It was held at the tennis court-cum-event venue at the back of Xaymaca. My estimate was roughly 300 people came in that night. The entrance fee was a whopping Php 200 w/ 1 local beer included per person. On a usual Saturday night, it's only Php 175 inclusive of 2 local beers. Fine, we went for it since it's Bob Marley's birthday celebration.

There were 5 bands to perform but we were only able to watch 3 of them. I only went because of Coffeebreak Island anyway. Too bad, they didn't come & I heard that Paul Putian (vocalist) was in Bangkok at that time so it's really not possible to see them on stage. Well, I was also hoping to catch Session Road or Spaceflower Show but I was disheartened.

During the event, we caught Reggae Mistress in action. They were fantastic & lively as always. A girl who seemed to resemble Katrina Halili even jammed w/ them.

Following them was Indio I, one of my favorite local reggae band. They were a consolation of some sort. I was merely waiting for Vic Facultad (vocalist) to sing "King Without A Crown" so that my night would be complete even w/o a glimpse of Coffeebreak Island. I dig both bands; it's just that I'm more into ska lately. The former is into reggae & the latter ska. They are always a good bet for a back to back gig!

Next performer was Peace Pipe. I'm not their huge fan so after their first song, we headed home as the fans were getting a bit pesky.

It's always an elated crowd where reggae is present that's why Xaymaca is my niche. Almost comparable to home, laidback & carefree.

This is my fave video for now-- Blind Melon w/ their very good performance of No Rain (acoustic rendition). For some reason this particular video makes me feel happy yet nostalgic. I don't know why. I love it just the same.
Too bad, Shannon Hoon's (the vocalist) dead because of Drug OD! What a waste. Before the band became famous, Shannon Hoon used to do back up vocals for Guns N' Roses. Well, that's all I can share.

Extra-ordinary Proposal c/o Neil Gaiman!

This was such a creative & really sweet way of proposing to a girl. I can't believe that there are still men like him in this modern techie world. I don't know the couple personally but wow they so made me cry w/ that proposal. (Read: I'm not a very mushy/sentimental type of person)

It happened during Neil Gaiman's seminar/book signing in Subic last November 24 for the 2007 Philippine Ad Congress. Am I so late w/ this buzz? Apparently, Jason (the bf) has been contacting Neil Gaiman's assistant as well as Fully Booked about 3 weeks before the event. Luckily, they were able to squeeze in his wonderful plan to propose to Maui (the gf) w/ the help of master fantasy author, Neil Gaiman. He's really nice & I think he was also amazed w/ the concept that's why he granted this request.

This was what happened:

1. During their turn for the book signing, Neil Gaiman wrote on the book "Maui, will you marry Jason?" & handed it back to Maui.
2. Maui then closed the book & thanked Neil.
3. Neil asked her to read what he wrote.
4. Still starstruck, Maui re-opened the book & closed it again without reading & said, "Thanks!!!"
5. For the nth time, Neil asked her to read the dedication & at last when she did... A series of "OMGs" followed.

Blogging Yeah!

This is something so new to me. Although I know it's been here for quite sometime now. It's just that I'm a late bloomer perhaps. FYI-- it was just recently that I decided to have an internet access at home, unbelievable & pathetic as it may seem. Yeah I know, I'm way left behind & trying to catch up w/ technology.

Well, I just realized that "Maki" (My Mac PC) has been lonely w/o any entertainment so I got him a toy (I'm pertaining to the internet).
Also, since I have been frequenting the internet cafe to browse & download some songs etc. & worse is that I have been reprimanded by my boss for browsing at work (it's a big No-no), so it was really high time for me then to get connected.
Whoa, I've been happy & sleepless ever since! What terrible addiction.

Going back to blogging, I'm uncertain if I have a great talent for writing. All I know is that thoughts & ideas keep on bubbling inside my head. I feel like these thoughts sometimes are driving me nuts that I need & it would be best to document them. I don't even know if any of my friends are into blogging. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I just want to pour down whatever sensible & trivial things I might have imagined as well as fantastic & so-so experiences I may have encountered.
Some of the entries here are previously written & I feel like publishing them just now.
